Training for the installation and operation of Variable Speed Drives | ABB
The primary function of Variable Speed Drive (VSD) also known as Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is to manage the transfer of energy from the power source to the motor. Positioned between the electrical supply and the motor, the VSD receives power from the supply, and then controls and adjusts the amount of power delivered to the motor.
How VSD works
Power from the electrical supply is fed into the VSD, which then regulates the power sent to the motor.
Inside a variable speed drive, the incoming AC power is first converted into DC power by a rectifier. This DC power is then stored in the drive’s capacitors, which smooth out the electrical waveform to create a stable and clean power source for the next stage. From there, the power flows to an inverter, which transforms the DC power back into AC power to drive the motor.
The VSD enables precise control of the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor, optimizing its performance to meet the specific demands of your operation. By continuously calculating and adjusting these parameters, the drive delivers only the necessary power (speed and torque), resulting in substantial energy savings. This ensures motors operate at their most efficient speed or torque, maximizing efficiency and reducing energy consumption significantly.
