Air Circuit Breakers (ACB)

How Does an Air Circuit Breaker (ACB) Work?

An Air Circuit Breaker (ACB) safeguards electrical circuits by allowing current to flow through its closed contacts under normal conditions. In the event of a surge, such as a short circuit, the ACB trips, causing the contacts to separate and generate an arc. To quickly extinguish the arc, a powerful air blast is used, effectively stopping the current flow and protecting the circuit, similar to blowing out a candle to prevent a fire.

Applications of Air Circuit Breakers (ACBs)

- Low-voltage distribution: protects and controls circuits in buildings, factories, and commercial facilities.
- Motor starting and protection: ensures safe startup and reliable operation of electric motors.
- Power plant auxiliaries: safeguards and controls equipment in power generation facilities.
- High-risk environments: ideal for areas with fire hazards due to their rapid arc quenching capability.
- Frequent operation: designed for durability, making them suitable for applications that require regular switching

What Are the Benefits of Air Circuit Breakers (ACBs)?

- Safety: Air as the quenching medium eliminates fire risk associated with oil-filled breakers.
- Fast operation: ACBs interrupt current quickly, minimising damage during faults.
- Low maintenance: Their simple design requires minimal maintenance compared to some alternatives.
- Sustainable: Air doesn't pose the environmental hazards associated with oil disposal.
- Wide range: ACBs come in various sizes for low-voltage to medium-voltage applications.
